Five databases that can be used by children to find information about a variety of topics. Use is limited to members of the EIU community.

Search Engines

AOL Kids
Games, videos, pictures, quizzes and blogs for kids.
Ask Kids
Search movies and games, or find answers in this stripped down site.
Yahoo!kids
Though not strictly a search engine, this is a major web guide for children.

General Sites

American Library Association's Great Web Sites for Kids
Although actually a link for parents, this includes 700+ appropriate web sites for children as well as lists of recommended books.
Awesome Library
Over 27,000 reviewed sources for kids, teachers, parents, and librarians.
Grolier Online  Password required
A comprehensive resource for students with links to The New Book of Knowledge, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Americana, La Nueva Enciclopedia Cumbre, Amazing Animals of the World, American the Beautiful, Lands and Peoples, and the New Book of Popular Science and well as a variety of links for educators to lesson plans and teaching activities. The password for this site changes monthly.
iPL2 for Kids
A great site for fun, games and homework help.
KidsKonnect
A safe Internet gateway for kids created and maintained by educators. Links to sites are available alphabetically or through a subject index.
Searchasaurus Off Campus Proxy
Provided through the Illinois Digital Academic Library (IDAL), this is a group of databases that includes an animal encyclopedia, a children's magazine index, and a picture file. (This site is only available to the EIU community.)

Specialized Sites

America's Story
Biographies, games, sound recordings, timelines and more presenting American history for children.
The Bookhive
This site, sponsored by the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, is very kid friendly and interactive, with pictures and reviews of children's books divided into interest categories.
Enchanted Learning
A wealth of fact sheets, classroom activities, quizzes, and links to resources in a variety of categories, for primary learners. A subscription site, but many pages are available to non-subscribers.
International Children's Digital Library
This site provides children across the globe with online access to some of the greatest children's books in the world. They plan to have 10,000 children's books drawn from 100 cultures in many languages freely available for children worldwide.
KidLink
Links children to a global network of friends through email and chat rooms. This is a monitored site, but it is always important for parents and teachers to talk about Internet safety.
Pink Monkey
Pink Monkey offers students in middle school and beyond free core-subject study guides, chapter summaries of literary works, test preparation resources, and links to classic texts.Some of the summaries are freely available; others must be purchased.
TryScience
Field trips, adventures, and experiments for kids from science centers worldwide.

Just for Fun

FunBrain.com
It's not really a criticism to say that this site has too much content--there are just too many features to explore in only one visit. This is an educational game site that ranks very highly among teachers and students.
