Request for Library Instruction

Booth Library offers a variety of library tours and classes to promote information literacy among the students, faculty, and staff of Eastern Illinois University. Please use the form below to schedule an instruction session or workshop.

Library Instruction Session Options
Please select the topics you would like included in your instruction session. Please keep in mind the amount time needed to cover each topic.

Library tour (brief) - 10 minutes
At the end of this session students will be able to understand the layout of the building, where to go to get research help, and general services provided on the main level of the library.
Library tour (long) - 35-40 minutes
At the end of this session students will be familiar with the services and collections on all floors of the building, the layout of the stack areas and how to use the compact shelving and microforms.
Introduction to the Library’s website - 5 minutes
At the end of this session students will be able to navigate the library’s website and will know where to go to begin their research, how to interact with the library and where to find answers to library related questions.
Beginning research strategies - 15 minutes
At the end of this session students will be able to identify search terms and discover ways to find those terms using library tools
Types of sources used in research - 15 minutes
At the end of this session students will be able to identify information needs, distinguish between sources of information and identify the best source(s) to find specific types of information.
Finding a book on a topic - 15 minutes
At the end of this session students will be able to search the library catalog to find a book on a specific topic and know how to locate that book in the library.
Finding journal articles on a topic - 15 minutes
At the end of this session students will be able to search general databases to find articles on a specific topic and to locate the complete article
Citing and Plagiarism - 15 minutes
At the end of this session students will be able to describe the purpose of citations and know how to use library resources for citing correctly and avoiding plagiarism.
Advanced searching - 40 minutes
At the end of this session students will be able to identify key sources in their discipline and conduct advanced searches in subject specific databases. Basic knowledge of the library and database searching is required. Students must have a specific assignment and/or database to search if selecting this option.
Research time 10-30 minutes
Students will use this time to work independently on their research and a librarian will be available for consultation.
